New Media Poetry, Institutional Support, and Art Museums | Jan 28th 2009

I thought this article was pretty interesting in describing new media poetry and its display and publicity. The author makes some interesting points about placing new media poetry in museums with all other arts. This poses some challenges, however. I do not think it is a good idea to combine both forms of artwork because it would mean changing the way museums operate. I think that people who visit art museums like the quietness of it. People enjoy being about to walk around as they please and look at paintings and artwork without having to stand in line trying to look at a computer screen. I think there would be too much excitement and disorder in a once calm environment. As the author points out installations of new media poetry must strike a balance between reaching a large audience and the intimacy that is needed for the interaction of the piece. Another good point that is brought up in the article is with the addition of new media poetry exhibits, security, storage and preservation will have to be updated. Plans for failure of the electronic equipment but also be put into effect. I think the best approach to this is to place new media poetry into separate museums. I think this is best for the already existing art museums. The article indicated two projects, MIT’s Center for Arts and Invention and Eyebeam, that are slowly developing to provide resources for artists working in new media poetry.
